Things to do

Canoe trips through the canals

Canoe trips through the canals

Munroe Island is best seen from the water. Anjana arranges early-morning and sunset trips through the narrow canals by country canoe, past coconut groves, prawn farms and village homes. Kayaks and shikara boats can be arranged too. Ask when you book, or on arrival.

Home-cooked Kerala food

Home-cooked Kerala food

Breakfast is included. Dinner is cooked at home on request: fish fry, prawn curry, chapathi, or a full Kerala meal on a banana leaf, with the spice adjusted to your taste. Only Kerala food is served.

Cycling round the island

Cycling round the island

Bicycles are kept for guests. Ride the quiet village roads to the lake shore and the family's favourite sunset point.

Slow days in the garden

Slow days in the garden

Hammocks in the common area, a big terrace above the main house, and a garden full of fruit trees and birdsong. Most guests come for the quiet.

Munroe Island

Munroe Island (Mundrothuruthu) is a cluster of small islands where Ashtamudi Lake meets the Kallada River, about 25 km from Kollam town. It is named after Colonel John Munro, the British Resident of Travancore.

Life here moves with the water, along canals lined with coconut palms, coir-making sheds and prawn farms. The best way to see it is slowly, by canoe.
